Cypripedium montanum (Photo by Dr. Nan Vance) |
Measurements of the inflated, labellum of
the flowers of the lady’s slipper orchid, Cypripedium
montanum, show it is intermediate in size compared to five, slipper orchid
species native to China and one in North America. To determine why pollination rates (94%) and fruit
set rates (52-85%) were so high in two isolated populations of C. montanum (a food mimic trap) from
2003-2006 we compared the visitation rates and diversity of prospective
pollinators at both sites.
