Plant-Pollinator Networks in Renosterveld vegetation, South Africa

by Oliver S. Cowan & Pippin Anderson

A seemingly idyllic setting
The fertile Renosterveld of the Overberg has undergone radical transformation in the past few centuries as European settlers expanded from Cape Town in search of land more suitable for agriculture. Today, only pockets of critically endangered natural vegetation exist within an agricultural landscape. Despite the important ecosystem service pollination provides, little work has been done on studying it, particularly at the community level.
In our study, over 240 hours of field observations and subsequent species identification provided a highly-resolved snapshot of three plant-pollinator networks falling along a gradient of secondary succession.
